Basic Story Vocabulary: Plot- the chain of events that make up a story. Setting- the time and place of a story. Complications- problems that arise as characters struggle to reach their goals. Protagonist- the main character in the story. Antagonist- the character (or force... but not THE force) in conflict with the protagonist. The Plot Diagram: Exposition- 1st part of the plot; includes the characters, setting, and conflict; includes an enticing incident.
Climax- The most exciting or intense part, the OMG!, a major turning point where nothing can be the same. Falling Action- The events that follow the climax and lead towards resolution and where complications/ the conflict begin to resolve. Resolution- the end of the story where the 'loose ends' of the plot are tied up, remaining questions are answered, most conflicts are resolved. Conflict: External Conflict: conflicts a character has with things outside of themselves.
Characterization- the way an author reveals a character in a story
Point of view- the standpoint from which a story is told. 1st Person- Told from the viewpoint of one of the characters using I, me, my, we, etc. 3rd Person- When the story is told to us through a narrator.
